Description
At the beginning of my trip to Colonial Williamsburg several years ago, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if each building I was looking at was original or one of many that were rebuilt. To say it's not obvious is an understatement. Over the years, they've done an incredible job making the city feel much as it must have to our colonial ancestors.
But the old courthouse seen here is one of those original buildings that has survived to today. In fact, well into the 20th century, it was still in use as an actual courthouse. Eventually, it was replaced by an actual courthouse so that it could be used to educate visitors interested in colonial history.
I loved the simple but elegant lines of the old courthouse and that was what I tried to convey in this work. But the lighting was super special too as I loved the opportunity to capture the dappled sunlight through the large old tree beside the colonial courthouse. For me, that light really is the essence of a late summer afternoon in this part of the world.
