Description
Montezuma's main street is not unlike many other small towns. The great bulk of it was built around the turn of the last century. By the time I was growing up here, this end of South Dooly had been modernized in the mid-century fashion of putting up false aluminum store fronts. The height of fashion that by then looked a little tired.
The flood of 1994 would change all that. It wasn't the first flood in Montezuma's history but it was the first to top the levee built in the 1930's and things have never been quite the same. On the positive side, the community leaders set out to document the history of the town and managed to get placement on the National Register of Historic Places. After that placement, the owners of these old main street buildings qualified for grants to restore much of downtown to its turn of the century charm.
Our downtown has never been quite as busy since that flood, but twenty years on, there's still a quaint sense of Americana and the everyday feel of a southern town on these old streets.
