Description
There are personal memories attached to many of my photos, but I can't say how proud I am that one of my most popular images from Egypt also marks the first time I saw THE pyramids for the first time. In our ride over, I somehow ended up in the middle and didn't get a single peek at the pyramids. At the time, that was sort of irritating, but in truth, I was utterly happy I saw the first pyramid on the Giza plateau in all its glory rather than between modern buildings in the nearby neighborhoods. This was how the pyramid was meant to be experienced, rising proudly from the earth against the bright Egyptian sun.
In fact, normally one wouldn't photograph straight into the sun like this, but as we approached Pharaoh Khufu's pyramid, I had to preserve the memory for myself Then I saw the silhouettes of my fellow travelers and I loved the contrast between the modern day people and the looming pyramid ahead. I had to capture this golden moment for myself as well as others to try to capture the emotion of walking in the footsteps of history.
Note: It should be no surprise that the pyramids and the whole of the Giza Plateau near modern Cairo are a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. After all, this is the only one of the original seven wonders of the world that still survives from antiquity.
