Description
In the grand scheme of things, it hasn't been that long since Montezuma's library was housed in this beautiful old turn of the century structure. One of many Carnegie Libraries across the country, Montezuma's was built in 1906. In the 1980's a new library was built. The Macon County Chamber of Commerce currently keeps offices inside this grand example of classical architecture.
I've taken plenty of photos over the years of our old library, but what I wanted to do with this work is peel back the years a bit. The doors and windows on the library were replaced in a very modern style sometime in the mid 20th century. I could not find any really good images of our old Carnegie Library before this change, and I found that most of them today, even if the changes were sympathetic to the past, the doors and windows had long since been replaced as well. So I examined as many vintage images of similar libraries as I could find. The result is this look into my home town's past. The only nods to the present are the sign for the Chamber and the smallest sliver of the building next door which was built in my life time.
