Description
When I first encountered this mid century modern motel sign on an old highway near Cordele, Georgia, the old motor-court motel was barely a memory and the vegetation was overtaking the sign. Since then the motel has been demolished and that beautiful vintage sign has been swallowed by roadside trees. So, I'm so glad I captured this scene while it remained with us.
This is definitely an example of fading Americana and a beautiful vintage sign. The old motel name, Southern Motel, reminded me of a Bailey White book, Sleeping At The Starlight Motel, hence the name I chose for this spot-color piece.
For me, the sepia toned surrounidng speaks to the heritage of this old sign, a pedigree from optimistic times when Mom and Pop motels dotted the landscape of the old pre-interstate American highways.
