Description
On one of the last few days of 2009, I was on a bus leaving Dublin bound for a circuit around Ireland. It was an incredibly beautiful day and a nice ending to a year filled with change in my life.
Our first stop on the way out of Dublin was Phoenix Park. I'm told this is the largest public park in Europe, but all I actually saw of it was this one beautiful but frosty morning.
The massive cross rising above the horizon is the Papal Cross. It was built in 1979 in honor of a visit by Pope John Paul II. The Pope led an outdoor mass on this site that was attended by in excess of a million people. Decades later, the cross still stands as a reminder of that event. And if you have any question about how large it is, look on the hill beneath it - those small figures are people!
I love the contrasts in this photo, from the frost-covered grass in the foreground to the deep blue dawn skies.
