Description
My first visit to Galway was part of a whirlwind tour of the Irish isle around New Years. I'll never forget the magic of watching snow whipping through the streets of that beautiful city. That lone night and the morning that followed was all it took to call me back to Galway for a closer look. This scene is based on my photos from that follow-up visit and my memories of snow falling on Galway.
It was only about two weeks later when I returned and well within the cold month of January. The Eglinton Canal Basin along Claddagh Quay was still frozen over with boats caught in the icy waters.
I loved the view of the old architecture of the Claddagh overlooking the basin. So picturesque! On the left is Saint Mary's Priory, the Claddagh Church, a Dominican church that is part of the long history of the old Claddagh, once a separate fishing village across the river from Galway proper. And that old building on the right is a former schoolhouse. When built in the 19th century, it was a Piscatorial school to teach the local children reading, writing, and vocational skills - mostly related to fishing.
A beautiful taste of the local history and life of the old Claddagh area beneath magical skies.
