Description
There's no question that cemeteries are an acquired taste, but for me, there's something slightly magical about cemeteries. My own interest grew from tracing my family history and visiting various family cemeteries over the years. And they came to take on a deeper meaning. As much as our culture tends to gloss over the end of life, it's every bit as much a part of the cycle of life as the beginning of it.
I'm quite drawn to historic cemeteries, and when I spied Glasnevin cemetery out the windows of a bus heading to Northern Ireland, I knew I had to find my way back. I didn't know the story of Glasnevin then, but it was a vast old cemetery - that much was plain through the windows of that bus.
It would be more than a week before I was back in Dublin and had my chance to explore this beautiful Irish city of the dead. And what was more, in that time, it had snowed! I had gone to Dublin not expecting to see snow at all. Snow in winter in Dublin is apparently a rare event, but I happened to be there in one of the coldest winters in 30 years, and the outcome was this unusual image of a snow covered path in the heart of Glasnevin Cemetery.
Glasnevin, a 19th century cemetery, is Ireland's largest non-denominational cemetery and the resting place to over a million souls. What you're seeing is just one small piece of what is also known as Prospect Cemetery.
There's something about this picture that still remains magical and mysterious to me. The path that disappears in the distance in a sea og graves speaks to me about the hidden journey we all take in life and beyond. What does it say to you?
