Description
I know I say this often about the places I've visited, but I would very much like to revisit Saint Catherine's Monastery at my leisure some day. The landscape of this region of the Sinai was just so rugged and beautiful and full of history. Santa Katarina lays claim to being one of the oldest working monasteries in the world, built in the time of Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century to enclose an earlier chapel built on the site of the burning bush. It's a place of pilgrimage for multiple faiths.
Our time in the monastery itself was brief as we were walking up Mount Sinai on the 3700 steps of repentance. Making that climb was exhausting! This picture of a Bedouin was taken just before we set out on the climb, and it remains one of my favorite photos of Saint Catherine's Monastery and this region of the Sinai. It captures the rugged landscape, the ancient history and the people who call this part of Egypt home today.
