Description
El Castillo, the main step pyramid at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza is the most well known structure on the site and probably the best known of the Mayan ruins. And there's no question it captured my imagination. Even with two trips to Chichen Itza under my belt now, most of my pictures from the site focus on that mysterious Temple to Kukulkan.
I played a lot with different angles of that impressive Mayan pyramid while I was there and this is one of my favorites, using the steps of a smaller temple platform in the foreground. I love the way the near and far steps meet and contrast, but it's the decorative serpent or snake head on the temple that I most like in this image. I love the architectural details that remain. So much is missing. Most if not all of the temples once had plaster coatings that would have been painted brilliant colors. Just imagine that serpent painted against the backdrop of a colorful El Castillo. As amazing as the ruins are, I'm in awe of what I imagine to have been here.Did you feel the same?
Note: The archaeological site of Chichen Itza is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site as well as having been in recent years dubbed one of the extant ancient wonders of the modern world.
