Description
One morning on my way to Chichen Itza, I spotted my first cemetery in the Yucatan. I was struck by its beauty from the bus window but it was several days later before I had a few minutes to wander inside another, much larger cemetery in Merida.
If you're like me and think this is just amazingly beautiful, then we both probably appreciate the beautiful colors and the heart-felt memorials made by the living for their loved ones who have passed on. I love it. No cold granite or marble, no somber colors here. What a wonderful testament to life the modern Maya make for their lost family and friends!
And I did read a little bit on the subject of the dead in Mexico. Most of us have probably heard of the Day of the Dead celebrations from south of the border. When I read about the customs in the Yucatan, it appears there's a perhaps stronger connection to the Indigenous culture here. These shrines are truly a connection between the ancient Maya and their Christian ancestors, a marriage of customs and beliefs. And you're seeing it made concrete in how they venerate their family members after they're gone.
Sitting on that bus on the way to Chichen Itza, I called this Miami meets New Orleans. i think the reasons are obvious, but I didn't have the full impact until I stood inside Cementerio Xoclan in Merida. The colors, the light that afternoon. It collided for a beautiful moment and, I believe, some powerful images of a beautiful Mexican cemetery.
