Description
I only had the pleasure of a brief stop in the city of Puebla in the state of Puebla in Mexico. I was literally wandering the old streets of Puebla less than 24 hours before shoving on for Oaxaca but the city made such an impression on me that it has remained high on the list of places in Mexico that I intend to travel to once more.
The city was filled with well preserved old Spanish Colonial architecture like its cathedral in the main square. The size of the bell towers was the first thing I noticed when visiting the cathedral. They almost felt as if they belonged on a larger building somewhere! Whatever the case, those towers make quite the statement don't they? You may notice there are only bells in one tower (the one on the left). There are legends that bells could not be placed in the other tower for fear it would collapse. Construction of the baroque church was begun in the 16th century but not completed until the 17th.
And it was one of many beautiful old churches, still in use as you can see by the people in the courtyard outside.
Note: The historic city center of Puebla, including its cathedral, are part of a UNESCO designate World Heritage Site.
