Description
Although I had read of the Maya and seen images of their cities in books and on documentaries, there's nothing quite like standing amongst their ruins for the first time. For me, that first time was at Chichen Itza, as it is for many people who manage to visit any Mayan ruins. Although I was coming from Merida, Chichen Itza is an easy day trip from Cancun, which is the reason so many manage to make the trek to explore these ruins.
It's the small details you appreciate sometimes in person but not otherwise, and as it was for me seeing the many serpent carvings at Chichen Itza. This snake's head is part of the art and architecture of the great ball court, the largest of the Mayan ball courts according to my reading. Imagine this guy with his carvings highlighted with paint those many centuries ago! It still looks beautiful to me, but it must have been quite a sight then, eh?
Note: Chichen Itza is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site and has been dubbed one of the wonders of the modern world.
