Description
I've read that the ball court at Chichen Itza is one of the largest discovered at the Mayan ruins that dot modern day Mexico and Central America. But what most impressed me was the ornamentation. The remnants of a large serpent that once lined the edge of the Mayan ball court was quite something to look at even centuries later. Imagine this guy not only less weathered but painted!
Chichen Itza is not only a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. In recent years, it was one of the winners in a campaign to designate the many wonders of the modern world (as only the pyramids in Egypt survive from the ancient list). It's not surprising to me that Chichen Itza made the cut. Not only is it a site that represents the peak of the Mayan civilization, its proximity to Cancun and the Riviera Maya are the source of a steady flow of visitors learning about the indigenous civilization that once thrived in the modern Yucatan.
