Description
While the massive pyramid at Chichen Itza is surely captivating, this relatively small temple I saw shortly after has stuck with me just as long. The Temple of the Jaguars backs up to the great ball court at Chichen Itza with the second story affording what must have been an excellent view of the Mayan games played there when Chichen Itza was a thriving city.
I'm not sure quite what it is about this temple that spoke to me, maybe the relatively clean but angular lines of its design? The front entrance would be at home on modern architecture, I think.
Of course, all the evidence suggests that we are looking at the skeletons of what the Mayan city. We're missing the plaster and paint that adorned these buildings! Much like other ancient sites we see today across the world, we only get glimpses of what they really looked like. The ancient world was not so bland I assure you!
Note: Chichen Itza is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site and has been in recent years dubbed one of the great wonders of the modern world.
