Description
For me, this image of hot air balloons in flight near the city of Luxor, Egypt, has always been the very image I associate with the word carefree. That's one part because balloons feel to me so serene. They float on the breezes somewhat at the whim of winds. And also because carefree sums up my emotions at the moment.
You see, this photo was taken in flight from a neighboring hot air balloon in a morning flight over the famous Valley of the Kings, an Egyptian landmark. I don't know how many visitors actually take part in this particular ritual but we were far from alone in the skies that morning. In every direction I looked there were more balloons in flight amidst these gorgeous dawn skies. The colors... I'm not sure I've seen anything like this since. Minute by minute the colors shifted. Just look at the deep blue, almost a lavender because it's infused with so much pink....
Once aloft, the burners on the balloons were not in constant use. The captains of these little air ships would occasionally hit the fire to add a little altitude. And it became a game for me for a period of time to try to capture at least one hot air balloon glowing in the dawn skies. And as you can see in this one, that beautiful nearest yellow balloon is glowing warm... You can imagine how excited I was to capture that moment!
I'm sure I could never exactly recapture that moment, the first time in a hot air balloon, but the serenity lives on... the zen of floating on the winds and hoping to capture a balloon lit up like a firefly in the Egyptian skies... sigh...
