Description
I had been in Egypt several days before I really got a taste of the River Nile. Sure, I had walked out on a bridge in Cairo, but a river through a city never gives you quite the same feeling as it does in a more natural setting. The character of the River Nile in Cairo vs Aswan was night and day. There were some views, like this one near Aswan that were timeless.
You see, a Felucca, the sailboat in this photo, is a traditional lateen-rigged sailboat. They have traveled the length of the Nile for generations, and it's only in more recent decades that they've become mainly a tourist experience. This photo was taken during my first of many days on the Nile. Although we didn't stay the night on the Nile this night, we did cross the Nile from Aswan many times over for several days, culminating in a two night cruise to Luxor. Camping on a Felucca was a once in a lifetime experience, let me assure you!
At any rate, this view of a Felucca hits me as incredibly timeless. These boats look as they have for ages and there's no real sign in the landscape beyond that it's 2008 or 1908.
