Description
There were so many unforgettable moments during my travels in Egypt. This undoubtedly included the two nights and three days I spent on a felucca, a traditional wooden sailboat. Spending the days and nights on the Nile between Aswan and Luxor was an amazing and tiring experience. After two nights, I've never been so happy to see a hotel!
But this photo was not of the felucca I called home for a brief time. This was taken on my first day in Aswan, and during my first experience in a boat on the historic Nile river, the literal life's blood of Egypt from ancient times unto today.
And there was something truly magical on that first experience watching the sails of a felucca unfurl. It felt, somehow, just right, like watching some exotic animal in its natural habitat. Fecluccas were a traditional form of transport up and down the Nile, long the main transport network in Egypt. It's only been in comparably recent times that these beautiful sailboats have become more a tourist activity than a staple of Egyptian transportation.
In the background is an Aswan landmark, the Old Cataract Hotel. I heard stories about its grandeur but never made it over to check it out in person. It certainly has a fantastic overlook of the Nile doesn't it? I'm sure I could sit in that hotel and watch the graceful felucca sail all day.
