Description
There is just something truly awe-inspiring about standing on the rim of an ancient volcano. The system of pit craters at Masaya Volcano National Park are mostly quiet these days but there's still activity and monitoring of this site for future eruptions.
It's not often you can get a real sense of what has shaped the landscape you see. Erosion, sedimentation, and the like are so subtle, but volcanoes are a different story. Looking into that pit crater with plumes of smoke still emanating, it's clear that the landscape as lush as it may seem, is a product of tumultuous change.
And it's no wonder that in ancient times places like these were seen as gateways and oracles and other supernatural settings. They really do seem beyond the everyday world.
