Description
There's a saying about real estate that one should invest in land because no one is making any new land. While that's fairly true on a human scale, on a geologic time scale, there is new land out there!
And standing on the rim of an ancient but active volcano chain, one really gets a sense of that reality. This almost alien landscape is an old rim from the Masaya Caldera in the asaya Volcano National Park in Nicaragua. A series of cone and pit craters lead to the currently active crater, which although mostly quiet still has a known history of eruptions.
And the whole landscape speaks of new land, low but verdant vegetation, a true sense of the new earth. And that was the feeling I had as I sat on this lower rim looking at some of my traveling companions in the distance on the higher rim. They felt so small, almost like ants on an ant hill, but still visible against the clouds. And at the same time, in the new earth sense, they reminded me of a little band of settlers overlooking a new-found land.
