Description
When I stumbled upon this old motel sign on the roadside near Cordele, Georgia, the motel was in ruins, and the sign seemed at the brink of being absorbed by dense southern foliage. Since then, the motel was razed and the sign has indeed been swallowed by a sea of green. I'm glad I stumbled upon this example of fading America before it was gone!
Little Mom and Pop motels like this one once dotted the old highways, before the interstates took over and travel became faster and faster. I stayed in motels like this one as a small child visiting family in South Alabama. I suspect those are likewise rusting away on the side of the road today. It's amazing how fast a staple of road trips can vanish!
I loved the mid-century echoes in the design of this old neon sign. It was hard to tell how much of the letters in Southern Motel was originally red and how much of it was now simply a rust-red color, but it was a vibrant reminder of a technicolor past!
