Description
It's been nearly two thousand years since the ancient seven wonders of the world were listed by the Greeks. And at that time, the three pyramids at Giza in Egypt were already nearly two thousand years old themselves. So it's amazing to know that of all the things on that list of things to see on that ancient list, only the pyramids survive.
Sadly, they are shadows of their former selves, but at nearly four millennia what would we expect? This is the second pyramid built on the Giza plateau, likely for the Pharaoh Khafre. A lot of people today mistake it as the first or great pyramid, the tallest. This is because it appears slightly taller because it still has the stone casing at the top. Try to imagine the entire pyramid with smooth casing stones and a plaster finish. And very likely painted! As awe inspiring as it is to stand before them today, it's nothing compared to what the experience must have been when they were new.
This image has been textured to create a classic feeling, a nod to the feeling of stumbling upon this great marvel of the ancient world in long ago times. I felt the people walking to the base reminded me of ancient explorers, how about you?
Note: The Giza Plateau funerary monument complex is part of a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
