Description
The great pyramids and the Sphinx are an historic site without compare. Sure, this is a place that's a modern day UNESCO designated World Heritage site, but consider this. This site was already thousands of years old when it was put on the list of the Seven Wonders of the World in antiquity. In fact, this is the only surviving member of the ancient wonders.
And Egypt was there too at the dawn of photography. In the early days of photography, photographers visited and took photos of the Sphinx and pyramids and they were published back home. Seeing those photos would fuel the next wave of tourism. People with the money to afford it came to the Pyramids and found photographers selling mementos of their visits there.
It was this knowledge of the history of photography that so influenced how I chose to edit this particular panorama. I wanted to create an image of the Sphinx that felt as if it could have been taken a century ago. Hence the warm golden sepia tones and the rough texture like an aged photo paper.
And in some strange way, the resulting image reflects that timeless feeling I had standing before a site so impossibly old as the enigmatic Sphinx and its companion pyramids.
