Description
I had only been wandering the streets of Salem a short time when I came upon this wonderful rambling old house near the city's historic port. I was quite excited as this was very much the image I had of New England in my mind's eye. Parts of the city, particularly near where the train landed, were quite modern and reminiscent of nearby Boston. But as I found my way to the port and the nearby House of Seven Gables, I finally found the Salem for which I was searching.
I adore the peeling paint and the solid federal style of architecture. This feels like looking into the pages of history. Here's a house that has stood against the harsh New England winters a long time. It's weathered storms coming off the sea and the harsh salt air. You can practically reach out and feel the years that have passed and the families that called this Salem house their home.
And of course, I could hardly complain about that brilliant winter sun. Only the day before it had been blustery and wet, but I had a little winter gift for my wanders in Salem, brilliant sunlight on a winter day in Salem!
