Description
Chicago's Municipal Pier #2 was opened in 1916, but it's better known today by the moniker, Navy Pier. From what I've read, Navy Pier is one of Chicago's top tourist attractions, so it's kind of ironic that the main reason I went was I wanted a water view of the skyline! I got more than I bargained for as even on an early spring weekday, Navy Pier was alive with activity.
It was built to serve as mixed-use docks in the early 20th century, for both entertainment and transport of goods on the ships that docked there. But in the 1940's it became a Naval training center and was closed to the public for a time.
Today the name Navy Pier has stuck but it's entire purpose is entertainment. Honestly when I first visited on that spring day, I didn't know all the history, but it sure looks pretty reflecting in the waters of Lake Michigan doesn't it?
