Description
There's just something about the style of early 20th century movie palaces that speaks to me. And I'm sure I'm not alone in that. The style was over the top but it shows what a huge deal the movies were then! It was an event to see a film!
I first visited Chicago during my college years on a road trip with friends to attend a fan convention, but we still managed to get in a little sight-seeing and I'll always remember the landmarks of Chicago we saw that day. A part of me has always wanted to retrace some of those steps but I'm sure it wouldn't be quite the same. It never is!
This artwork is based on a black and white photo taken for the US Historic American Building Survey, a government project documenting American architecture like this beautiful old movie theater. Looking at contemporary pictures of the Chicago Theatre, I suspect the photo I based this on was before it was renovated as there are some minor differences to today in that beautiful marquee. So, this picture is a vintage view of Chicago in more ways than one!
