Description
Although I traveled to Chciago frequently for a period of time, it was always on business. Still, I had the chance on a trip or two to see the sights so to speak. One of those that I'll never forget was walking along Navy Pier on a spring afternoon. It was spring by local standards at least. For my blood, it was still cool and blustery. That contrast in expectations between me and the locals is what makes travel fun. I enjoy trying to experience a place through local eyes but enjoy the detachment to see the landmarks of a city anew.
Navy Pier was simply fun, a great distraction to be sure. I'd love to revisit it on a summer day in the future, but I suspect this photo of the amusement rides will always be the image which comes to my mind when I think of Chicago. It reminded me of a hundred carnivals and fairs of my childhood. I loved seeing the swings in motion against the dusk sky and the Ferris wheel lights aglow.
Even though it was very much a Chicago landmark, I couldn't help feeling like I had captured a page from the childhood of so many of us, the magic of the amusement park!
This image also holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first for which I sold a print lo those many years ago when I was first getting my footing as a visual artist. As it was sold at an open art show in Atlanta, I have no idea who to thank for that first nod of approval, but it fueled the fire to continue!
