Description
London is a city invented and re-invented many times over. In 1666, the great fire decimated this part of London, including Old St Paul's Cathedral, a medieval church. The city rebuilt and although the same streets were generally followed, a brick and stone city replaced the old.
Flash forward hundreds of years and it was World War II and the German blitz that transformed this place again. Someone from London before that time would barely recognize this place. Only the great dome of the Saint Paul's still stands to speak of their London.
Thus we have this incredibly modern approach to St Paul's from the Thames today. I personally love the mixture of architecture but there's still a pang of regret that I was not alive to experience and see what was here before. In my imagination, I see it, but at the same time, I'm glad that the city moves forward and embrace the new in each era, just as St. Paul's doesn't reflect the medieval church it replaced either. London is truly a city that embraces it's history but always seems to reach forward.
