When I lived in the Atlanta area, one of my go-to-places when I wanted a little touch of nature was the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature preserve. Oddly it was because I had been there on a geology field trip once in college several years before. At the time we were studying the massive granite outcropping there, similar to the more well-known Stone Mountain. It's a beautiful and rugged area that I'm pleased is being preserved for future generations to enjoy.
One of the things that both Stone Mountain and Arabia Mountain are well known for is the showy Confederate Daisies that grow there in the fall. They area amazingly pretty and delicate looking flowers to grow in such a rugged and rough terrain.
Apparently these somewhat rare flowers are also known as Stone Mountain Yellow Daisies, Porter's Sunflower, and Helianthus porteri. Goodness flowers have a lot of possible names don't they?
Whatever you call them, they sure are beautiful plants aren't they? I took a lot of photos of them on my trips to Arabia Mountain, but this is my favorite. I love the shallow depth of field. Beyond the one flower in focus, everything fades into an almost abstract portrait of flowers growing on a granite rock-face. It becomes a kaleidoscope of blues and golds and greens so quickly, doesn't it?
