Description
There's no question that one of the highlights of my visit to Rome was the chance to climb to the top of St Peter's Basilica. The memory of the climb alone was fun. I'll never forget reaching the top. The doors flew open and a crowd of hot and sweaty climbers burst onto the top of the little cupola at the pinnacle of St Peter's dome. It was mid winter and probably close to freezing and we were all loving the cold breeze! For just a few moments it felt like stepping into an air conditioned room from the summer heat. And then reality clamped down, the coats and jackets and caps were all flying back on all around me!
After that euphoric moment, that feeling of accomplishment after the long climb, I looked out over Rome and I think my mouth went slack-jawed at the incredible view. The climb was interesting, but this was the real goal!
And I'm sure I did not appreciate St Peter's square nearly as much until I saw it from above. The architecture stands out so against the surrounding city.
An unforgettable view from a trip that was full of beauty!
