Description
I was only in Oaxaca a short time, but it seemed as if every street corner contained an historic church, and certainly there was a lot of Spanish colonial architecture to be seen. One quickly understands why the historic core of the city is a UNESCO designated World Heritage site. There is an abundance of history here despite earthquakes and civil wars.
I stumbled upon this little baroque church a few blocks from where I was staying in Oaxaca. And it was only after being home that I determined the name of the church never mind any of its history. My photo of Templo de San Felipe Neri purely boiled down to the beautiful architecture and the distinctly Mexican vibe I got from the scene (down to the billowing flag on the roof). It turns out the church was built in the 17th century and was where Benito Juarez and Margarita Maza were married. There does seem to be Mexican history on every street corner in Oaxaca!
Still, whatever the case, it's a beautiful little baroque church isn't it? A real feeling of being on the streets of Mexico. And it's interesting that the longer I look at it, the more it reminds me a smaller version of the Cathedral only a few blocks away. Not just the same green stone but the same general style.
