I've said many times over that I find surfing to be incredibly zen. Or at least the idea of surfing. I have to also admit that so far, I'm entirely a spectator, but each time I've encountered surfers, I've found myself lost in time watching them try to be one with the sea, to ride the waves. I haven't always had that zen feeling. Prior to seeing surfers in Northern California one afternoon, I had never given it a thought. Afterward, well, I still want to spend hours watching them and perhaps one day I'll actually join in.

This scene, to me, is iconic. I was in a hostel overlooking Towan Beach in Newquay and in the late afternoon, the sun was out and I saw surfers flocking to the sea. I followed down with my camera. As I looked around at the beautiful Cornish seaside, I spotted these two guys contemplating the ocean and the light was just perfect. The result to me is just classic, and I hope you get that same Surfing Zen vibe off of this picture that I do.

Life is full of happy surprises. After just over a decade working in the 9 to 5 cube world, I threw caution to the wind to follow my dreams of being a full time visual artist. That was five years ago! Is it easy? No, but something truly worthwhile is rarely simple.
