Description
The day I spent in the sleepy bedroom community of St Albans I passed by "The Abbey" on multiple occasions. Although it's known locally as The Abbey, St Albans is actually a cathedral of the Anglican church. Sometimes old names just stick.
But it was in the late afternoon sun just before I left that St Albans really sung for me. The Gothic revival facade bathed in golden sunlight and reaching skyward was really a beautiful sight!
And I think it was at this moment that I appreciated most the changes to the church. As it was told to our group, in the 19th century, the old medieval (mostly Norman) church was really in sad shape. It might not be here today had a wealthy benefactor not stepped forward. The only issue was he wanted the church repaired and remodeled to fit the Gothic Revival style that was popular at the time. That's how we end up with the Norman tower in the distance and the impressive Gothic facade in the foreground. As much as I love historical accuracy, it is darned beautiful isn't it?
