Artist's Description

I've always loved vintage and kitschy Americana like this large coffee pot advertising what was, apparently, the best cafe in Monroe, North Carolina, circa 1929.

The original photograph is one taken by my grandfather, Charles Edward Wilson, Sr. He wasn't a professional photographer, but the stacks of old family photos I have attest to the fact that he often had a camera with him during much of the 1920's and 1930's. Not surprisingly, the typical subjects are family and friends. This scene must have been taken on a trip with friends as his home was in South Alabama near the Florida panhandle. The couple standing beneath the giant coffee pot, in dapper 1920's clothing are, I'm afraid no longer known to us, but what a great pose! You have to wonder if they stopped at the City Cafe in Monroe later that day to see if the roadside ads were right?

I've removed a good deal of wear from this vintage roadside photograph but I tried to keep the general coloring that suggests an...
