Description
Hay House in Macon, Georgia, is known as the Palace of the South and it's certainly a palatial building! It was built between 1855 and 1859 for William Butler Johnston and his wife Anne. They had toured Europe on their honeymoon and collected furnishings as well as the inspiration for their future home. Designed by T. Thomas and Son of New York, many of the craftsmen who did the actual construction were brought over from Italy. And that makes sense when you know the architectural style is Italian Renaissance Revival.
The home would pass from the Johnston family to the Felton family (descendents of the Johnstons) and finally the Hay family. Today this grand dame of Macon is part of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
