Description
On a summer day several years ago in Hawkinsville, Georgia, I stumbled over these great old industrial buildings, The red, of course, is what caught my eyes the most, but there was also some nostalgia as the towering old building somewhat reminded me of the old cotton gin in my own hometown in rural Georgia.
I'm not sure what this conglomeration of buildings was in its past but it looks like it grew over time with all the different construction materials from brick to rustic tin and rough boards.
I'm theorizing it may have been an old cotton gin or cotton warehouse. That it's across the street from an old Cotton Mill that's been converted to lofts makes its past in cotton a bit more likely but in this part of Georgia, there are a number of old agriculture uses it could have had.
To me, this scene represents an echo of a way of life that was already passing out of existence when I was little. The small town gins and mills that once beat the drum of local industry have become way-markers of small town America's past.
