Description
Standing on the rim of the pit crater of Masaya was amazing but it really took getting up to higher ground to fully appreciate the sight. Up close, it's smoke and rock, but from just a little distance it becomes an open wound in the earth, truly the geological building blocks of our planet in action. Not something you get to see everyday unless you happen to live near a volcano!
And I'm not sure I'd be that brave. Even though Masaya has been relatively benign in living memory, it's still, in my mind, a dangerous piece of geology to behold, sort of the proverbial smoking gun.
One short afternoon examining the landscape of Nicaragua's Masaya Volcano National Park was not nearly enough for me. This is one of those places I would have loved to have lingered awhile. It's a setting that feels new, even though this volcanic belt is quite old. But it's not the comparatively sedentary landscape you find elsewhere.
