Description
This exercise was something comparatively new for me. Typically when I'm creating a piece of textured photo art, the photo that forms the basis of the scene is my original work. In this case, I wanted to depict a scene from historic New York City, the new NYC of the early 20th century. There's just something about that vintage of the city that stirs the imagination, don't you think?
So, I started roaming through the public domain images housed by the Library of Congress and came across a nice black and white scene of Union Square looking North on what was then 4th Avenue (today it's Park Avenue north of Union Square). What really caught my imagination in this particular scene was the street car and tracks.
Of course, this is not simply a layered piece. I've gone to some lengths to add color to the scene. I referenced pictures of these same buildings today and when the colors didn't strike me, I referenced historic colors from the early 20th century. This scene from Union Square is believed to be circa 1910 to 1915.
I really love the result. It's a piece of historic art that I feel like I could very nearly step into. I think I may have to do more of these pieces using historic imagery, particularly ones I feel I can add my own voice to like this one of vintage New York.
