Description
Granada was definitely one of those cities that is a pleasant surprise. I loved much of the places I saw and the people I met in Nicaragua, but I have a special place in my heart for old cities and beautiful old architecture. Granada is a wonderfully preserved colonial city, but if I had to lay odds on it, I'd say the building in this picture from the historic city center is a bit newer. It has a classical revival feel to it, don't you think?
Granada was also ahead of the curve having one of its main streets in the old city center mostly closed to car traffic leaving a beautiful island of calm for pedestrians. This is a very European thing that I wish more cities would consider. It creates a real sense of community that one doesn't have sealed inside a car.
When I look at this slice of life from Granada, I can feel the cool night breeze off Lake Nicaragua again... nights in the tropics are often the best part of the day for being outside!
