Description
I found this little church in the heart of modern day Merida so unique that I had to hunt it down again on my second trip to the Yucatan in Mexico. This church sheltered beneath massive palm trees is the Iglesia de Santa Ana. So called because it's in the heart of the barrio of Santa Ana.
It's believed this church sits on the foundation of a Mayan temple, and there's certainly plenty of evidence that much of the colonial architecture in Merida was built using materials from the original Mayan city of T'ho. The history of a church here goes back to the 1500's when a church was built here to serve the indigenous May. But the building we see now was built in the 1700's. Some think that the unusual pyramid shaped bell towers, though, may be a nod to the Maya temples that once stood here. Whatever the case, they are unusual aren't they?
The barrio of Santa Ana used to be on the edge of Merida, but in the centuries that have passed, it's become part of the city center only a short walk from the city's main plaza. Still when I look at it, it feels like the heart of its own little town. Do you get that same vibe?
