There's a timeless quality to walking the streets of Pompeii. And I don't think it's entirely because of the effect that you're walking the streets of a city that was encased in metaphorical amber nearly two thousand years ago.
It's because the more things change, the more they remain the same. I didn't notice it while I was standing on this street in Pompeii. Or if I did, it was subconscious. The connection would come several nights later sitting in Rome with a friend having dinner in the heart of the Eternal City, the heart of the Roman empire that included Pompeii so long ago.
We were sitting in a little diner with a door that took up the entire wall that faced the street. If you look on the left in this photo, you can see the remnants of a similar configuration. At least in the old quarters of Italian cities, things are beneath the skin not so unlike they were in long-ago Pompeii.
Some things endure I guess...
