Description
My first visit to Brasstown Bald was in the early spring several years ago. Theoretically I knew that it would be colder at that elevation (the highest in Georgia's Appalachian Mountains). In practice, I was still shocked when I got there, not just at the temperatures but how wintry much of the vegetation still looked. If you look on the horizon beyond this beautiful evergreen tree, you'll see a thicket of bare trees! Looks more like winter on Brasstown Bald doesn't it?
Regardless of the season, I was taken by the beautiful form of this everygreen and the old rustic fence line that led to it. The clouds beyond framed the rest of the scene perfectly.
I'm 90% sure this is a variety of spruce tree after examining the limbs/needles in this photo and comparing them to what I saw online, but I'm no botanist, so I welcome any plant identification corrections!
