Description
We ended our stay in NIcaragua on a small island chain called Solentiname near the Port of San Carlos. While Solentiname remains a highlight, San Carlos was mostly a mystery. Except for a brief outing there in the afternoon, we spent most of our time there getting on and off boats at the docks there. But what I saw always sort of made me wish for the chance to experience it a bit more.
Compared to other places in NIcaragua, it was San Carlos where the language barrier hit hardest and where I saw the incredible sincerity of the people there. When a local shopkeeper and I kept going round and round about how much was owed, he finally wrote the number down and I realized I had so misunderstood the number I was trying my darnedest to overpay him. He wouldn't accept it even though it amounted to hardly any difference in my currency.
I will always think of that chance encounter on the shores of Lake Nicaragua when I look back on my short time in the little city of San Carlos just beyond the rustic but beautiful docks seen in this unforgettable landscape.
