Description
When I moved to Atlanta in the late 90's, the Roxy was already a well known local stage for musical acts passing through the city. It's hard to imagine that I somehow never managed to see an act on the stage there, but the one band I was going to see there had to cancel and that's history.
By the time I left Atlanta, The Roxy had closed its doors. It's since re-opened as an event space and back under it's original name, the Buckhead Theater. The pictures I've seen of it are night and day difference from the eclectic/vibrant feel of the old Roxy I knew on Roswell Road in Buckhead. So, I get nostalgic for times I never knew there but for the era I lived in Atlanta when I was fresh out of college.
The Roxy marquee is just a chapter in the long history of the building, though. It opened in the 1930's as a local movie theater in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. From what I've read the business that kept its doors open was reinvented several times over, but the Roxy is the passage of time this black and white photo captures.
