Description
Today it's hard to imagine London without the great dome of St Paul's Cathedral, but following the fire of 1666 when Old St Paul's burned, it was one of the most controversial elements of the church designed by Sir Christopher Wren. He bowed to public pressure on some elements of his design, but that gorgeous dome meant to rival St Peter's in Rome survived all attempts to mute it.
The Great Fire shaped London as we know it today and helped usher in the English Baroque style of architecture. Wren's churches as well as other buildings he designed helped bring about a sea change across a nation that had been resistent to embracing continental architecture.
