Description
Of my two visits so far to Chichen Itza, it was the summer day that I spent here that had the best skies. In fact, it was representative of my week spent there. Each day started clear, each day ended with a sky streaked with fluffy clouds. It was a regular weather pattern you could practically set your clocks by. And those cloud filled skies produced one of my personal favorite images of the great Maya temple to Kukulkan.
Maybe that regular cloud pattern was also observed by the ancient Maya? Certainly they were well acquainted with the march of time. El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulkan, seen here is just one piece of evidence. It is aligned to various stellar phenomena and even the number of steps plus the top level equal the number of days in a year.
This large pyramid is probably the most-easily recognized of the Maya ruins. It represents a pinnacle of Maya architecture, and its proximity to Cancun means that its visited by a steady stream of travelers each year. Not only is Chichen Itza a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, it was in recent years dubbed one of the modern wonders of the world.
