Description
There are some photos that stick with you a long time, that are fresh years later. At least that's my experience, and this photo of a street corner in the Egyptian village of Daraw is one example. This little village was one of my favorite stops. This was not your typical tourist stop and the people we encountered were just as curious about us. It was a wonderful peek at life in another culture and at the same time a reminder of how much we are all the same beneath our window dressing.
The corner itself was what attracted me first, the make-shift markets lined the streets and the buildings were just exotic enough to not feel like home. But when I saw this little old man wandering by with his bicycle, I knew I had found the subject for the foreground of my photo. There was something about him that just resonated with me. His clothing felt so familiar in contrast to others in the scene, and it somehow anchored the scene for me, the feeling of familiarity far from home, the reminder that small towns the world over bear some resemblance.
