Description
Among the many highlights of my too-brief Egyptian Adventure was getting to sample just a little of everyday Egypt, far removed from the touristy markets of the many normal stops on a visit through this ancient land. And there's nothing quite like getting the opportunity to see people much like the ones you know at home, going about their day to day lives.
I was struck when standing in Daraw, a town known for its camel market, at how similar and foreign it felt at the same time. On the surface, it looks very different, from the style of the buildings to the make-shift markets, and of course the middle eastern clothing. But once you scrape away the differences, we're all people going about our lives, chatting with our friends and neighbors and taking a gander at the unknown visitors.
When I spotted the building that dominates this scene soaking in the late afternoon sun, I knew I had to use it in a shot or two. It feels both familiar and foreign, the theme of my images from Daraw.
