Description

One of my favorite parts of my travels in Egypt was the opportunities I had to see the 'real Egypt' - i.e. small towns and villages far removed from a mega city like Cairo. It was in places like the one pictured, Daraw, where tourists were a curiosity. If you look closely, you'll even notice one of the people in this street scene staring back over his shoulder.

While I guess this might make some people uneasy, to be the subject of interest, to me it was confirmation of how much small towns the world over favor and how human we all are. A traveler from a distant land would get the same level of scrutiny in my own small town.

The photo this textured piece was based on was taken in Daraw, a small town known for its camel market. While that was somewhat interesting. To me, it was the chance to roam the streets and see everyday life a world apart that most intrigued me. Doesn't it look at once familiar and foreign? I see places to buy fruit and veggies but at the same time, the signs are unintelligible to my English-speaking mind. I love the dichotomy!
