Restored artwork - originally by G.F. Scotson-Clark
A vintage piece of Americana - this poster was an advertisement for the July issue of Century Magazine in 1905. Century Magazine was published between 1881 and 1930 in New York City. The July 1905 issue had an article about the history and design of electric streetcars written by Frank J. Sprague. Known as the "Father of Electric Traction" he designed the Trolley system in Richmond, Virginia in the 1880s. It was a system that was rapidly copied across the US and beyond.
Today street cars and Trolley are seen as nostalgia, but at the turn of the last century, this was the cutting edge of mass transit! Any city that dared call itself one had streetcar tracks and overhead lines powering them.
This vintage advertising caught my eye the moment I saw it. I loved the simple clean lines and the feeling of progress the design captured.
